Uncovering Caribbean British Heritage: Stories That Connect Us All

Join us in celebrating the rich narratives of the British Caribbean experience through authentic community voices and pioneering contributions at Pathfinders.

Celebrating Caribbean Legacies Together

Pathfinders is a unique community archaeology project dedicated to uncovering and sharing the rich narratives of early and mid-20th century British Caribbean experiences. We honor the pioneering contributions of the Pathfinders as we document authentic, grassroots stories that reflect the diverse cultural heritage of these communities. By enabling individuals to voice their lived experiences, we enrich the historical narrative of post-war migration, creating an archival monument that connects past, present, and future generations.

About Pathfinders

The Way Forward

Vision

Pathfinders will be an archival monument that commemorates and celebrates important Caribbean British history.

This heritage project will document authentic grassroots culturally nuanced stories. This will enable people and communities to share authentic first-hand accounts of their lived experiences.

Mission

Tell the stories of Caribbean British people who came to the UK from the Commonwealth during and after WWII, and show how their contribution shaped the modern Britain we all share.

  • Put Black British history into the wider cultural context.

  • Increase public understanding of heritage, history, and migration across the decades.

Windrush and beyond: a more complete picture of the post-war migration story

Pathfinders time period: 1939 – 1971.  This timescale includes the official Windrush Generation period, 1948 – 1971.

Plus, because the majority of the MV Empire Windrush passengers from the Caribbean were World War II heroes, Pathfinders also includes the World War II period, 1939 – 1945.

Including these hero’s stories gives a more comprehensive picture of the post-war migration story.

"People Say

Storytelling

Positivity

“There was an overwhelming amount of positivity, and many said we should take the project forward for further performances, so their children and grandchildren can witness and understand their stories.”

This project has helped me to have hope again.

Art

Noticeable Impact

The most surprising part of the project for me was the noticeable impact we’d made. I had previously been a cynic about the impact of art, but I now realise I just hadn’t been looking at the right art.”

Mapping The Journeys

The Pathfinder archive uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a mapping tool and a dynamic analytical framework for our heritage archiving

The Pathfinder Project uses maps and geographic information to follow and explore people’s journeys over time and across different places.

By layering historical and modern data, it helps show how communities move, and interact.

This approach makes it easier for everyone to engage with data, see patterns, understand the stories of people and locations.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund

Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to fulfil our vision

Pathfinders is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund.  The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest funder for the UK’s heritage. Using money raised by National Lottery players we support projects that connect people and communities to heritage. Our vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future.

From historic buildings, our industrial legacy and the natural environment, to collections, traditions, stories and more. Heritage can be anything from the past that people value and want to pass on to future generations. We believe in the power of heritage to ignite the imagination, offer joy and inspiration, and to build pride in place and connection to the past.
